Category Clothing Washers
I have an Amana washer, and of lately it hasn't been draining all of the fabric softener during the spin cycle. It is leaving some in the bottom of the drum which the clothes soak up and turn blue. I have cleaned the dispenser and inside the agitator with no luck. I have tried running the extra rinse cycle too with the same result. Any suggestions?

If you don't want to call a serviceman, quit using liquid fabric softener and see how the washer works without it. If you absolutely must use liquid softener, add it yourself without using the dispenser (when the rinse cycle starts to fill with water) and see how that works. It sounds like something is wrong with the automatic softener dispenser.

I no longer use fabric softener and have switched to using 1/2 cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle.
When I remove the clothes from the dryer they are so soft.

How do you do this with a front loader?

I use white vinegar most of the time myself. But when I sue fabric softener (for my fleecy stuff) I add it once my wash has started then I mix it with water in the dispenser.
Before I had this machine, I used the Downy ball. Works great, never an issue. You might want to check out repairclinic.com to see if there might be an issue. Very helpful site.

I fill the softner compartment with softner and it dispenses right away while the washer is filling. So try adding softner with the detergent. Maybe this will work for you.

My front loader did this also; dispensed the softener with the detergent right at the start. I found that if I added some water to the liquid soap in the soap dispenser it raised the level of the liquid high enough to 'register in machine's brain'.

The Samsung WA56H9000AP is part of the Washing Machinetest program at Consumer Reports. In our lab tests, Washing Machinemodels like the WA56H9000AP are rated on multiple criteria, such as those listed below.
Washing performance: This reflects the degree of color change to swatches of fabric that were included in an 8-pound test load of mixed cotton items using the machines' most aggressive normal cycle. (We do not use special cycle or option buttons.)
Energy efficiency: This score is based on the energy needed to heat the water for 8-pound loads using a warm wash and cold rinse. We consider both gas and electric water heaters, and include electricity needed to run the washer and energy needed for drying. Washers that extract more water are scored higher.
Water efficiency: This score denotes how much water it took to wash our 8-pound load. On models that didn't set the fill level automatically, we used the lowest fill setting that sufficed for the 8-pound load. We then calculated water used per pound of clothing.
Not dispensing from detergent area.
When detergent is not dispensing from this area, it's mostly caused by NOT using HE detergents. If not, you will need to dis-assemble and clean the dispenser drawer using our Cleaning Steps below.Tips for using HE detergents.- Use NO MORE than the amount recommended by the detergent manufacturer, it's even safer to use less.
- If you see soapsuds (bubbles that form when soap is mixed with water), use half of the recommended amount or keep reducing until no suds are seen anymore.
- If you live in an area with soft water, it may be necessary to keep reducing to as little as 2 tablespoons until you understand the right proportion that completes your washing cycle without any form of suds.Lancaster photo printing. As the University's in house print service have we offer a wide range of print. Binding and finishing; Promotional materials including pull up banners and flags.
- HE Detergents that are 2x or 3x times concentrated may require you to use even less than 2 tablespoons!
- If using a powdered HE Detergent, the blue liquid detergent insert must be removed from the drawer. Place the powdered detergent in the cavity where the blue insert was located.
Not dispensing from bleach area.
- Make sure that the bleach compartment is clean and properly attached. Refer to our Cleaning Steps below.
- Make sure you use liquid bleach only.
- Avoid using splashless bleach because it is too thick to dispense.
Not dispensing from softener area.
- Because fabric softener has a thicker consistency, we recommend that you dilute the fabric softener with water in ratio 50:50.
- Make sure that the softener attachment is clean and attached properly. Refer to our Cleaning Steps below.

Fabric softeners and dryer sheets are great at making clothes and linens feel soft and fluffy, reducing static cling and making them smell great. You may be tempted to douse every load of laundry (or toss a few extra sheets in the dryer)…but before you wash another load, read this. There are certain types of clothing and fabrics that should absolutely NEVER touch these products. Like, NEVER EVER! Let’s break them down and give you some effective alternatives.
1. Athletic or Performance Wear
Most workout clothes are designed to wick moisture away from your body, dry quickly and keep you cool as you are exercising. The coating that fabric softeners and dryers sheets leave behind, lock sweat into the fabric and keep it from drying. This often leads to permanent odor from the bacteria locked in the fabric. Yuck! Instead, Wash with similar items in a cold, gentle cycle and air dry.
2. Microfiber Cloths
The tiny fibers that make microfiber attract and lock in dust, dirt, and moisture. While microfiber is relatively durable, it becomes pretty useless once the fibers absorb the waxy residue fabric softener and dryer sheets leave behind. It’s tempting to use these products with microfiber to keep them from building static cling in the dryer, as they often tend to do. Resist the temptation! Instead, toss a ball of aluminum foil in the dryer with microfiber items to release the static charge.
3. Towels
The long, thick fibers of towels are designed to absorb moisture and air dry quickly. The residue from fabric softeners traps moisture in the fibers, keeping it from drying fully. This could definitely be why the towels in your bathroom seem to have a constant musty smell. Instead, add vinegar to the rinse cycle and speed up drying time by adding wool balls to the dryer. Your towels will be super absorbers and dry more quickly after each use.
4. Children’s Sleepwear
Most infant and child sleepwear is designed to be fire resistant for safety reasons. Lipids and wax from fabric softener residue can cause the fabric to lose its fire-resistance quality-and even make it highly flammable. Instead of using fabric softener or a dryer sheet, add vinegar to the rinse cycle in the washer. It will soften the fabric and reduce static cling. For those extra static clingy PJs (you know the ones), do the vinegar rinse in the washer AND add a foil ball to the dryer cycle for good measure.
5. Swimwear
Swimwear is typically made of Polyurethane (Lycra, Spandex or Elastane), Polyester, Nylon or blended synthetic fibers. By design, these fabrics absorb very little water, and therefore dry very quickly. Fabric softener residue attracts moisture and will keep the suit from drying, leading to a musty odor, and possibly mold growth. Instead, hand wash with gentle detergent, squeeze excess water out (don’t wring), then lay flat to dry.
6. Lingerie
Since lingerie is worn close and often rubs against the skin throughout the day, it’s best not to add the extra potential for irritation with fabric softener. Much like with similar fabrics, softeners trap sweat, body oils, and odors, giving these items a lingering stink. Instead, hand wash lingerie and delicates that come in close contact with skin with a gentle detergent and air dry.

Strip it Down!
Uh-oh!! Is it too late if I already used fabric softener on one (or all) of these items?
Don’t throw them out just yet! Most items CAN be saved with a “stripping” process. To do this, run items thru a hot cycle with 1 teaspoon of concentrated dish soap, such as Dawn. DO NOT ADD LAUNDRY DETERGENT. Then, run the same load thru another hot cycle with 1 cup of white vinegar. AGAIN, DO NOT ADD ANY DETERGENT. That should remove any residue build-up on your clothing.

For hand wash only (or hand wash recommended) items, soak overnight in hot water with 1 tsp dawn dish soap. Then, rinse and soak overnight again in hot water with 1-2 cups of white vinegar. Last, rinse thoroughly and air dry.
Alternatives
Soften and reduce static cling with these gentle, fabric-friendly options:
Vinegar Rinse
Add ½ cup distilled white vinegar into your washer’s softener dispenser (or use a Downy ball). The smell will disappear in the dryer.

Wool Dryer Balls
You can find wool dryer balls on Amazon for about the same price as a couple of bottles of fabric softener except these will last A LOT longer. Toss 5-6 into the dryer to soften a load of clothes. They’ll also help larger loads dry more quickly and evenly.

Foil Dryer Ball
Grab the Aluminum foil from the cabinet, pull a 12”-18” sheet and crush it into a ball. Toss one into the dryer to reduce static. The ball will shrink and tighten as it’s used. Replace once the edges begin to crack or pull apart.

Take Away
It’s easy to see how fabric softening products have gained popularity…who doesn’t want soft, fresh smelling laundry, RIGHT? Well…sometimes fabrics feel how they are designed to feel. If you prefer more soft and supple clothes and linens, stick to natural fiber fabrics. Splurge on higher quality fabrics and you’ll still save money by skipping store-bought softeners- PLUS your clothes will last longer! You can also soften and reduce static with safe, eco-friendly alternatives.

The washer's automatic dispenser may need to be cleaned periodically to eliminate traces of liquid detergent and fabric softener can solidify in the drawer and drawer compartment or inside the plastic siphon tubes. This build-up can restrict the detergent additives from entering the tub properly.
Symptoms of laundry additive build-up include:
■ Detergent / Fabric Softener does not dispense
■ Excessive water remains in the detergent / softener compartments after cycle finishes
You will need a small non-abrasive brush and warm water.
